Orlando Shooting: Why Israel Availed the Vicious Circle of Terrorism?

By Sajjad Shaukat for Veterans Today

At least 50 people were killed and more than 50 others were wounded when a gunman opened fire and took hostages at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, early Sunday morning (On June 12, 2016.)

Quoting several law enforcement sources, reports of the US officials and media have revealed that the shooter has been identified as an American-born man Omar Mateen who was in touch with the Islamic State group (ISIS or ISIL) and had pledged allegiance to the ISIS. Marten’s parents are from Afghanistan. Reuters reported that ISIS claimed responsibility for the Florida attack via its Amaq news agency which said an “Islamic State fighter” carried out the assault.”

However, it is the deadliest mass shooting in the US and the nation’s worst terror attack since 9/11.

After the terror attacks in Paris and Belgium, the opinion of Christians, Jews and Muslims is sharply divided in accordance with their own peculiar religious background. Prejudice is ruining so high against one another that by reading the name, some people of the opposite side ignore his views. This division can be noted on the social media.

In fact, fault cannot be laid on the general masses, a majority of whom does not have much time to go in-depth. Hence, they are swayed by emotions, stereotypes and prejudices created by the political leaders who keep on manipulating any crisis for their own self-interests with the sole aim of getting their sympathies to increase their vote bank. There are equal strong pressures from religious and nationalist forces in wake of global war on terror which is dividing the world on religious lines.

Experience of the recent acts of terrorism show that general masses start pointing fingers at the ISIS, without going into depth to know as to who (Entity) is behind this outfit, as to what the aims that entity wants to achieve, and what is the secret game in this regard. In these terms, we need realistic analysis to detect the real culprits who were behind the shooting at the nightclub in Florida.

However, before the November 13 terror attacks in Paris some Western intelligence agencies had warned about these assaults and that warning was manipulated by Israel, as Tel Aviv wanted to obtain a number of secret aims owing to various developments. In order to revive the global war on terror, the neo-conservatives, Zionists and Israel needed the backing of the whole Europe against the Russian-led coalition of Iran, Iraq, the Syrian army-the National Defense Forces (NDF) and Lebanon-based Hezbollah, which had broken the backbone of the US-CIA-assisted ISIS terrorists, Al-Qaeda’s Al-Nusra Front and the rebels who have been fighting to oust the Syrian President Assad’s government and against the current Iraqi regime as part of America’s double game to obtain Israeli interests. Moscow also exposed the smuggling of oil by ISIS-controlled regions of Iraq to some European countries and inaction of their governments including America in this respect.

It is mentionable that by ignoring Israeli protest, some EU member states like France and Belgian had officially recognizing a state of Palestine. The positive impact of this recognition was that EU pressure was growing on Tel Aviv for the two-state solution of the Israeli-Palestinian dispute and to restart a negotiation process.

Some other developments like reluctance of NATO countries to support America’s fake global war on terror and acceptance of Syrian refugees by the European countries, especially Germany and the EU rule to boycott goods produced in Israeli settlements on the West Bank irritated the Israelis.

In this context, connections of the Israeli secret agency Mossad are also notable. In March 2015, Iraqi Special Forces pointed out that they had arrested several ISIS’s foreign military advisors, including American, Israeli and Arab nationals and four foreign passports in an operation in Mosul. Last year, a senior aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin also stated that Mossad is training ISIS terrorists, operating in Iraq and Syria. Meanwhile, arrest of Israeli Col. Shahak in Iraq, his admission, proving links of Al-Qaeda and ISIS with America and Mossad and medical treatment of the ISIS warriors in the Israeli hospitals might be cited as instance. ISIS which was already being assisted by the CIA and Mossad was directed to send its militants in Paris and in connivance with the home-grown terrorists to conduct terror attacks in Paris.

Mossad links with the ISIS terrorists can also be judged from the fact that this terrorist outfit conducted several suicide assaults and bomb blasts in Syria, Iraq, Yemen and Afghanistan, including the latest one in Beirut(On June 12). But, it did not target Israel.

Nevertheless, Israel achieved its several sinister designs in the post-Paris attacks phenomena and after the shooting at San Bernardino, California. Like the drastic aftermath of 9/11 tragedy, rulers and politicians of the US and European countries, including their media started misguiding their general public by creating chauvinism against the Muslims.

In this context, Republican presidential nominee Donald J. Trump had called for a ban on Muslims, entering the United States.

After the Paris terror attacks, Israel-led America also obtained the support of its Western allies (NATO) against Russia. American jet fighters and those of its Western coalition started targeting the ISIS terrorists in Iraq and Syria.

But, with the acceleration of threat by ISIS, some of the European leaders began empathizing upon the solution of the Palestinians issue. In this connection, hours after the Paris tragedy, the Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom said that “to counteract the radicalization, we must go back to the situation in the Middle East of which not the least the Palestinians see that there is no future: we must either accept a desperate situation or resort to violence.”

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin displayed as to how fight the ISIS and Al-Qaeda, as Russian military compelled these terrorist groups to vacate most of the regions of Iraq and Syria. On March 14, 2016, Putin’s announcement to withdraw most of the Russian forces from Syria, after strengthening the Assad regime, while emphasizing upon the political solution of the Syrian crisis gave a setback to the US-led Western allies.

In these circumstances, by manipulating the warnings of the Western intelligence agencies, on March 22, 2016, with the help of ISIS and Mossad, Israel again targetted Europe by arranging the Brussels blasts in order to avoid the settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian issue, and to implicate Syria-based ISIS—to thwart the UNO-backed ceasefire agreement about Syrian war which was brokered by the major powers including Russia and the US, and to cause a major rift between Russia and the US-led NATO, while provoking the Western Christians against the Muslims.

After the terror attacks in Paris and Brussels, Israel succeeded in obtaining its clandestine designs. Europe has been put on high alert and these subversive acts are being taken as attacks on the whole continent. In one way or the other, European politicians, especially right-wing leaders and their media are misguiding the general public against the Muslim World by exaggerating the so-called threat of Islamophobia. Owing to their irresponsible approach, right-wing parties and “Stop Islam” movement in the Western countries, particularly in Europe are becoming popular by largely attracting their people. Besides, Muslims in the continent are facing severe backlash in form of attacks on them and threats (In some countries) in wake of anti-Muslim protests. Without caring for human rights, several Muslim refugees have been expelled from various European countries. Although Israel succeeded in its secret aims, yet some developments frustrated its rulers. In this respect, besides a number of human rights groups, particularly Amnesty International in its press release on April 1, 2016 criticized, the controversial Turkish-EU refugee deal by pointing out, “Large-scale forced returns of refugees from Turkey to war-ravaged Syria expose the fatal flaws in a refugee deal signed between Turkey and the European Union…all forced returns to Syria are illegal under Turkish, EU and international law.”

Protests and violence have become commonplace at the Greek border, where more than 50,000 refugees have been stranded since Macedonia and other Balkan countries shut their borders in February. On May 7, 2016, hundreds of pro-refugee activists who came to Brenner mountain pass from other Italian regions as well as from Germany, Italy and Spain spurred unrest in protest of the closure of the Austrian-Italian border. However, these double standards of the US-led West will result into recruitment of more terrorists by the militant groups like ISIS on global and regional level. This is what Tel Aviv wants.

Differences have arisen among the European countries in relation to the refugees and the asylum-seekers. Austria’s plan to build a fence along its border with Italy has been met with disapproval by Italy and Germany.

Besides some EU countries, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, while criticizing Austria’s controversial new laws said that he was “concerned that European countries are now adopting increasingly restrictive immigration and refugee policies…such policies and measures negatively affect the obligations of member states under international humanitarian law and European law.”

A rift has been created between the West and Turkey, the close ally of NATO. On May 8, 2016, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has kept up his rebuke of European nations, accusing them of dictatorship and cruelty for keeping their frontiers closed to migrants and refugees fleeing the Syrian conflict. He clarified that “Turkey would not meet a EU demand for his country to reform its anti-terrorism legislation.”

And on February 10, 2016, President Erdogan lashed out at the US over its support for Syria’s main Kurdish group, saying, “The failure to recognise the Democratic Union Party (PYD) as a terrorist group is creating a “sea of blood” in Syria. He explained, “The PYD, on which the US relies to battle so-called Islamic State (ISIS or Daesh) in Syria, is an offshoot of the banned Kurdistan Workers’ Party.”

In the meantime, in March, this year, Syrian fighters with the support of popular volunteer combatants liberated more towns from the ISIS militants’ control like the Thayyem Oil Field, especially the ancient city of Palmyra, and may recapture the group’s self-proclaimed caliphate-capital in Raqqa.

As part of the US double game, Syrian rebel groups on April 12, 2016 launched a major offensive on positions of the ISIS in Syria’s northern province of Aleppo. In order to show to the international community and Western public that America is fighting against the ISIS terrorists, US has accelerated air strikes on the ISIS-controlled regions. As per CIA directions, in Aleppo city, shell and mortar attacks by the Al-Nusra Front, ISIS and the rebel groups have continued on the Kurdish neighborhood of Sheikh Maqsoud. ISIS has also continued firing rockets across the border into the Turkish town of Kilis. In the pretext, the Turkish military is retaliating with shell fire.

It shows that the US and Israel have created a very complicated situation in Syria and in the vulnerable countries of the Middle East including Turkey by making a vicious circle of terrorism; so that American-Israeli covert aims in Syria could be justified, which could also get the favour of the Western countries which are already biased against Assad’s government.

It is noteworthy that the US-led West, especially Europe has already started a new Cold War with Russia. The US has decided to station permanently additional troops in Eastern Europe as part of NATO move to defend the continent against the presumed threat of Moscow. In response, Moscow also responded that it would send 30,000 Russian troops along its western and southern borders.

Although Cold War has revived between the US-led West and Russia, yet some recent developments have further disheartened the Zionist-Israeli-led America.

On May 2, 2016, US Secretary of State John Kerry who opened a second day of talks in Geneva, stated, “The United States and Russia have agreed to make sure that there is more accountability to enforce the cessation of hostilities on a day-to-day basis.” On May 3, 2016, after negotiations, Moscow and Washington agreed for a ceasefire in Aleppo.

While as part of American dual strategy, fighting continued in Aleppo, because Israeli Mossad and American CIA did not forbid the ISIS terrorists and the rebel groups from attacking the Syrian army. At the same time, Kerry changed American previous stance to keep Assad in power and warned Syria’s government on May 3, 2016 that they face an “August 1 deadline for starting a political transition to move President Assad out, or they risk the consequences of a new US approach toward ending the 5-year-old civil war.”

The US and Israel think that before Syrian forces-backed by Russia occupy more territories, especially Aleppo which is strategically important and is industrial capital of Syria, rebel groups and ISIS should be given a free hand to continue fighting.

Besides, movement of the left-wing parties which welcome the refugees is also becoming popular in the West, particularly Europe in response to the far right-wing groups.

British Prime Minister David Cameron had sparked a furious row over the contest for the May 5, 2016 election of London mayoralty after he accused Labour candidate Sadiq Khan of sharing a platform with Islamic extremists and a supporter of the ISIS. During the debate in the House of Commons, Angry Labour MPs accused Cameron of racism. Despite it, Londoners elected their first Muslim mayor of Pakistan’s origin Sadiq Khan by defeating the Conservative rival Zac Goldsmith-a wealthy Jew.

The TTIP leak by Greenpeace on May, 2, 2016, relating to a sweeping free trade agreement under negotiation by the EU and the US has shown how US can pressure EU to compromise health and the environment under trade deal.

It is of particular attention that US internal problems such as curtailment of liberties, failure of the Obamacare, criticism of Hilary Clinton about contributions of election-campaign from Wall Street backers, email-scandal etc. disappointed the Obama Administration. While in wake of the election-campaign, Republicans and American public have also been criticizing the government of Democrats and CIA for America’s (NATO) longest war in Afghanistan, facing defeatism, useless proxy wars under the cover of global war on terror and US heavy cost of war which caused serious financial crisis, adding to the dilemmas of Americans.

Owing to its confused policies, Obama Administration was pressing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to agree for the two-state solution of the Israeli-Palestinian dispute. A majority of the intellectuals and analysts of the West have also been emphasizing upon the settlement of this dispute.

In a speech to the Israel advocacy group J Street, American Vice President Joe Biden remarked on April 18, 2016, “I firmly believe that the actions that Israel’s government has taken over the past several years…the steady and systematic expansion of settlements, the legalization of outposts, land seizures…are moving us and…Israel in the wrong direction.”

Even, a debate has started between the Zionists and non-Zionist Jews for the two-state solution of the Israeli-Palestinian dispute. On March 21, 2016, in a speech in Utah, the only Jewish Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders had sparked controversy by saying, “The US should be even-handed and must not always say that Netanyahu is right.” He criticized Israel’s treatment of Palestinians, condemning the expansion of West Bank settlements and blasting Prime Minister Netanyahu’s withholding of tax dollars from Palestinian authorities and called for an end to the economic blockade of Gaza. Earlier, in an interview with the New York Daily News on April 1, 2016, Sanders remarked about Israel with blood libel in relation to the August 2014 Israeli war in the Gaza Strip by explaining that Israeli forces bombed apartment houses and hospitals and “killed 10,000 Palestinian civilians…Israel’s force was more indiscriminate than it should have been.”

Here, it is also of particular attention that since the fundamentalist party BJP led by the Indian Prime Minister Narindra Modi came to power in India, it has been implementing anti-Muslim and anti-Pakistan agenda.

India which has strategic partnership with Israel has perennially been manipulating the double standards of the US-led West regarding world phenomena of terrorism in connection with Pakistan and Afghanistan, while exploiting their anti-Muslim approach to obtain Indo-Israeli secret designs. Both Tel Aviv and New Delhi have been equating the ‘wars of liberation’ in Palestine and Kashmir with terrorism. Their main purpose is to divert the attention of the West from their own atrocities, while employing delaying tactics in the solution of these issues.

Meanwhile, with the help of Pakistan, a series of meetings were held in Islamabad and Kabul among the representatives of Pakistan, Afghanistan, China and the US to develop an understanding for the earliest possible resumption of stalled talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban with view to ending nearly 15 years of bloodshed in Afghanistan. Trust deficit has deepened between Pakistan and the US since May 21, 2016, when the CIA-operated drone strike killed the Chief of the Afghan Taliban Mullah Akhtar Mansour in Pakistan’s province of Balochistan. However, CIA, Mossad and Indian RAW succeeded in sabotaging the peace process between the Afghan officials and representatives of Tehreek-e-Taliban Afghanistan, as the latter refused to continue peace talks.

India and Israeli want to prolong the stay of the US-led NATO in Afghanistan, as their desperation in Afghanistan had increased in the backdrop of growing engagements of Islamabad, Kabul, Beijing and Washington.

Particularly, fast growing economic power of China coupled with her rising strategic relationship with the Third World, and especially Pakistan—after signing of the agreement, ”China-Pakistan Economic Corridor” has irked the eyes of Americans, Indians and some major European countries.

In case of Afghanistan, there are several groups of Al-Qaeda, ISIS and Taliban. Some of them are being used by CIA, Mossad and RAW to obtain the collective and individual designs of their countries against Pakistan, China, Iran and the Middle East. The terrorists of ISIS and TTP which are strategic assets of the CIA, RAW and Mossad in Afghanistan have claimed responsibility for several terror attacks inside Afghanistan and Pakistan. While in some cases, with the help of Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and ISIS, Mossad and RAW are collectively arranging terror attacks in Afghanistan to create further lawlessness in that country because it suits their clandestine interests.

Like Russian-led forces in Syria, Pakistan’s Armed Forces broke the backbone of the militants through military operation Zarb-i-Azb—killing thousands of insurgents including foreign terrorists. Therefore, this development has also surprised CIA, Mossad and RAW whose agents have well-established their networks in Afghanistan and are determined to thwart the success, achieved by Pakistan’s armed forces against terrorists.

It is worth-mentioning that America’s anti-Muslim, pro-Israeli and pro-Indian Donald Trump has become the nominee of the Republican Party which has still to confirm his candidacy.

Trump’s opposition to Muslim refugees, especially from Syria is well-known. During his appearance with the National Border Patrol Council’s Green Line radio show on May 15, 2016, Trump has predicted that refugees with ISIS-funded cell phones will conduct another 9/11-like terrorist attack in the US. During a GOP debate in December, 2016, he had already expressed similar thoughts by giving “Americans wakeup call about border security and to take it seriously,” elaborating that he had “no doubt, the attackers were already entering the country.”  On February 14, 2016, CIA Director John Brennan warned that ISIS attacks on “U.S. soil is inevitable.”  However, the purpose these warnings were exploited by Mossad and its affiliated CIA operatives to target the night club of Florida.

Unlike the presidential nominee of the Democrats Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump suits the interests of Israeli. But, leaders of his own parties are opposing Trump’s nominee due to his extremist statements during the election-campaign in wake of secret documents, leaked by the Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca, which pointed out on that Trump empire is linked to 32 offshore companies, and thus, avoided taxes. In such situation, like the 9/11 type, Israel needed a new terror attack in the US to ensure the success of Trump in the forthcoming presidential elections.

After the shooting at the gay night club in Florida, Donald Trump repeated his call for the President Obama to resign, slamming him for having “disgracefully refused to even say the words “Radical Islam.” Calling on Clinton to get out of the general election race for the same reason, Trump said, “Because our leaders are weak, I said this was going to happen…we cannot afford.” Trump again remarked that he would decrease immigration from the Middle East because “since 9/11, hundreds of migrants and their children have been implicated in terrorism in the United States.” He, once again, asked for the ban of any Muslims, entering the U.S.

Nonetheless, we can conclude without any doubt that CIA, RAW and Mossad might be in collaboration in conducting shooting at the nightclub in Florida by using the ISIS militant so as to obtain the collective interest of their countries. Israeli Mossad could also be in connivance with Indian RAW in this respect.  And most probably, by availing the vicious circle of terrorism, Mossad might have arranged this massive shooting due to differences among the EU countries, refugee crisis and to fortify the US alliance with the Western countries, particularly Europe, to divert the attention of American public from internal problems, prolonged war on terror etc., and especially to avoid the solution of the Israeli-Palestinian issue.

Therefore, in the post-Florida terror attack, instead of repeating the 9/11 aftermath like the anti-Muslim rhetoric, while pursuing secret states’ strategies of the past in the modern era, the US leaders and policy makers must follow realistic approach by thinking on these lines. They need to detect especially the role of Mossad which would continue to target the innocent Americans by conducting more terror attacks through the ISIS terrorists. They must also seek solution of the Syrian and Palestinian crises, including the Kashmir dispute. While, loyalist Americans,  non-Zionist Jews and peace-loving citizens of every other religious community should play their positive role for world peace by stopping the division of the international community on religious and cultural lines.

Unbridgeable Trust Deficit between Pakistan and the US

By Sajjad Shaukat

Trust deficit has deepened between Pakistan and the US since May 21, 2016, when the CIA-operated drone strike killed  the Chief of the Afghan Taliban Mullah Akhtar Mansour along with his poor taxi-driver Azam in Nushki, Balochistan.
On June 10, this year, a high-level delegation of the US, including Gen. John Nicholson, Commander Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan, and Ambassador Richard Olson, US Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan visited Islamabad and met Pakistan’s Chief of the Army Staff Gen. Raheel Sharif and Adviser to the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz Adviser separately.
According to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), during the meeting, “regional Security Situation, with particular reference to border management and peace and stability in Afghanistan in the post-21 May US drone strike environment came under discussion. Expressing his serious concern on the US drone strike in Balochistan as a violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty, the army chief highlighted as to how it had impacted the mutual trust and was counterproductive in consolidating the gains of Operation Zarb-e-Azb. Gen. Raheel Sharif said all efforts for durable peace in the region have to be synergized with shared commitment…all stakeholders need to understand Pakistan’s challenges with regard to porous border, inter-tribal linkages and decades-old presence of over three million refugees. Blaming Pakistan for instability in Afghanistan is unfortunate. Raising the demand of targeting TTP and Mullah Fazlullah in their bases in Afghanistan, the army chief reiterated Pakistan’s resolve not to allow hostile intelligence agencies’ efforts, especially RAW and NDS, of fomenting terrorism…Pakistan is committed to work for a long term peace process for Afghanistan under the Quadrilateral Coordination Group framework.”
During talks, Sartaj Aziz also expressed almost similar by adding that the May 21 drone strike was not only a violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty and breach of the principles of the United Nations Charter, but has also vitiated bilateral ties between the US and Pakistan.
Calling the US to respect Pakistan’s sovereignty, Foreign Minister of China Wang Yi also condemned the drone attack on June 9, 2016 by elaborating, “Pakistan has given innumerable sacrifices for war on terror. The world powers should acknowledge Pakistan’s sacrifices…rather than criticizing…Quadrilateral Committee on Afghanistan has been formed for process of reconciliation. Pakistan had always supported continuing Afghanistan reconciliation process and other parties should also play their due role in this process.”

However, America’s open double standards in relation to India and Pakistan and secret double game with the latter have created unbridgeable trust deficit between Pakistan and the US.

The US has always preferred New Delhi over Islamabad. In this context, recently, the US State Department official David Ranz stated that the deal of supplying F-16 aircraft to Pakistan was no longer possible, because the deal expired on May 24, 2016, as the U Congress did not approve it.

During the recent visit of the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to America, he and   President Obama met on June 7, 2016. Addressing the media jointly, Prime Modi said, “I am thankful for the help and support that my friend Barack Obama has extended with regard to India’s membership of the Missile Technology Control Regime and Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG)…India and the US have been working shoulder to shoulder and are proud of this legacy and will continue working with each other.”

India and the US have agreed to build six nuclear reactors in India. In this context, during his first visit to New Delhi, on November 6, 2010 the US President Obama announced the measures, America would take regarding removal of Indian space and defence companies from a restricted “entities list”, and supported Indian demand for a permanent seat in the UN Security Council including membership of four key global nuclear nonproliferation regimes. The US agreed to sell India the most expensive—the new F-35 fighter jets including other modern aircraft and weapons.

Ignoring the solution of Kashmir dispute which resulted into three wars between India and Pakistan, America started backing Indian hegemony in Asia to counterbalance China. During President Obama’s second visit to India, on January 25, 2015, the US and India announced a breakthrough on a pact which would allow American companies to supply New Delhi with civilian nuclear technology, as agreed upon in 2008 in order to make India a great power of Asia. This duplicity has initiated a dangerous arms race between Pakistan and India, and between China and India.

Setting aside the Indian irresponsible record of non-proliferation, and safety of nuclear arms, Washington also pressurized the International Atomic Agency (IAEA) to sign an accord of specific safeguards with India. It permitted New Delhi a broad atomic cooperation, while superseding the IAEA regarding transfer of nuclear equipments and technologies. These arrangements also entail enrichment and reprocessing items under the so-called cover of IAEA. America had already contacted the Nuclear Suppliers Group to grant a waiver to India for starting civil nuclear trade on larger scale, while the latter had been getting nuclear material and arms of all kinds from Israel, and other Western countries like UK, Germany and France.

Undoubtedly, unlike Indian past record which proves various kinds of unprotected incidents, security lapses in relation to various nuclear plants and the related-sensitive materials including events of nuclear theft and smuggling, Pakistan’s nuclear assets are in safe hands—well-protected and are under tight security arrangements, having the best command and control system. This fact has also been recognized by some top officials of the US and some western countries. However, taking cognizance of the US double standard, China and some responsible countries have decided that they would oppose in the meeting of the Nuclear Suppliers Group to grant a waiver to India in this regard.

Nevertheless, after the latest incident of drone attack in Balochistan, Afghan Taliban leaders refused to participate in the US-sponsored talks with the Afghan government. Notably, in the recent past, with the help of Pakistan, a series of meetings were held in Islamabad and Kabul among the representatives of Pakistan, Afghanistan, China and the US to develop an understanding for the earliest possible resumption of stalled talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban with view to ending nearly 15 years of bloodshed in Afghanistan. For the purpose, a number of the trilateral meetings were also held among Pakistan, Afghanistan and the America.

It is mentionable that on January 13, 2015, at least seven personnel of the Afghan security forces died during the suicide attack which targeted the Pakistani consulate in Jalalabad. The Islamic State group (ISIS, ISIL or Daesh) claimed responsibility for the terror assault which coincided with efforts to restart the suspended peace process with Taliban insurgents. Pakistani sources suggested that Indian secret agency RAW was behind this terror attack to thwart these peace talks.

Indian desperation in Afghanistan is increased in the backdrop of growing engagements of Islamabad, Kabul, Beijing and Washington. Therefore, by arranging terror-assaults in Pakistan and Afghanistan, New Delhi is also sabotaging the peace process between the Afghan officials and representatives of Tehreek-e-Taliban Afghanistan, which started in Murree, Pakistan, on July 8, 2015 through a meeting, hosted by Islamabad, and in it, Chinese and American representatives, also participated.

While, the US, China and Pakistan are jointly working to facilitate the process so as to bring peace both in Pakistan and Afghanistan, and the whole region. But, America is playing double game with Pakistan, because it is the only nuclear country in the Islamic World, which irritates America, India, Israel and some Western partners of the US. Hence, secret agents of American CIA, Israeli Mossad and Indian RAW which are well-penetrated in the ISIS, the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) are using the militants of these terrorist outfits to destabilize Tibetan regions of China, Iranian Sistan-Baluchistan, Pakistan’s province of Balochistan and Central Asia (Russian interests) by arranging the subversive activities to promote acrimonious sense of dissent, sectarian violence and to arouse sentiments of separatism. In this connection, the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is their special target. Collectively or individually, these intelligence agencies are also assisting Jundullah (God’s soldiers)—the Sunni militant group which is active in Balochistan against Shias. Besides martyring several personnel of Pakistan’s security agencies in the province, these foreign-backed entities kidnapped and massacred many innocent people, including Chinese and Iranian nationals.

Based in the Afghan provinces of Kunar and Nuristan, Maulvi Fazlullah, chief of the TTP is running a parallel government in Afghanistan. The militants of this outfit have their own legal system/legislation and own authority, exercising strict control in most parts of Afghanistan.

TTP terrorists may have had visited Pakistan under the garb of Afghan refugees for medical treatment, but remain operational in Afghanistan. Early return of Afghan refugees from Pakistan, and better management—control of Pak-Afghan border is, therefore, essential.

In case of Afghanistan, there are several groups of Al-Qaeda, ISIS and Taliban. Some of them are being used by CIA, Mossad and RAW to obtain the collective and individual designs of their countries against Pakistan and the Middle East. India and Israel which want to prolong the stay of the US-led NATO troops in Afghanistan which have become the center of covert activities, are exploiting their dual policy, especially of America against Pakistan, China and Iran. Particularly, terrorists of ISIS and TTP which are strategic assets of the CIA, RAW and Mossad have claimed responsibility for several terror attacks inside Pakistan, including the recent ones in Lahore (Children Park on Easter Sunday), Balochistan, Karachi and in Afghanistan. In some cases, Indian RAW which has well-established its network in Afghanistan, is also alone conducting subversive attacks in Pakistan. While in some cases, with the help of TTP and ISIS, Mossad and RAW are collectively arranging terror attacks in Afghanistan to create further lawlessness in that country because it suits their clandestine interests.

In the first week of May, 2016, credible online sources disclosed that Engineer Mohammad Khan, the 1st Advisor and a close friend of Afghan Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah has been arrested by Afghan forces/agencies for alleged links with the ISIS. Information strongly suggests that the ISIS has penetrated even in high ranking Afghan government officials as well.

It is noteworthy that those Taliban groups which are fighting against the occupying foreign for the liberation of their country know that ISIS is backed by the US-led countries. Hence, a number of times, they have attacked on the ISIS terrorists in Afghanistan.

In the recent years, when the US-led NATO forces felt that they were failing in coping with the stiff resistance of the Taliban in Afghanistan, the high officials and media of their countries started accusing Pakistan’s army and country’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) of supporting the Afghan Taliban in order to pacify their public for the protracted war in that country, which still continues. India avail the opportunity and also accused Islamabad of cross-border terrorism in Afghanistan. However, it was part of the US double game with Islamabad.

It is notable that when Pakistan’s Armed Forces broke the backbone of the militants through military operation Zarb-i-Azb which started on June 15, 2014 in North Waziristan Agency, and afterwards, extended to some other tribal agencies—killing thousands of insurgents including foreign terrorists, while, ISI and other law-enforcing agencies captured several terrorists in various regions of Pakistan, including suicide-jackets and weapons. What the US-led NATO countries could not do in Afghanistan in the last 14 years, Pakistan’s Armed Forces have done in one year. Taking note of the ground realities, the US and other Western countries have begun appreciating the capabilities of Pakistan Army and other security agencies, and are, now, recognizing the sacrifices of the country against terrorism. But, especially America is still playing double game with Pakistan by following an ambivalent strategy.

Nonetheless, the strikes by the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) which have continued in Pakistan’s tribal areas since 2004 have intensified during the Obama era, and are clear violation of international laws and open act of aggression damaging sovereignty and territorial integrity of Pakistan. Collateral damage caused by these strikes is not only clear violation of international human rights, but also ignite violent and retaliatory sentiment among victims and perpetuate extremist wave.

American double standards are significant, as on one hand they demanded Pak support for dialogue and on the other hand, targeted Taliban Chief Mullah Akhtar Mansour with drone, putting Pakistan in to a difficult position.

During war against terrorism, Pakistan which has rendered innumerable sacrifices in men and material and has always condemned such action which is a cause of regional instability.

We can conclude that the double standards and double game of the US-led entities have created unbridgeable trust deficit between Pakistan and the US.

US-led Countries’ Conflicting Interests Deteriorate Pakistan-Afghanistan Relations?

By Sajjad Shaukat

Paying full attention to the Syrian crisis, Western media and their viewers have, perhaps, forgotten the South Asia where the conflicting interests of the US-led countries and entities like the secret agencies are deteriorating Pakistan-Afghanistan Relations which are equally essential for the regional and global interests of their countries like Syria.

Waging a prolonged war in Afghanistan, the US and other NATO countries have realized that after the withdrawal of foreign troops, Afghanistan would be thrown in an era of uncertainly and civil war. They realize the fact that there is a co-relationship of terrorism or stability in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Hence, US-led developed nations which also spent billions of dollars for the development of Afghanistan have repeatedly agreed that without Islamabad’s help, stability cannot be achieved there.

It is notable that on December 9, 2015, the Heart of Asia-Istanbul Process Conference was held in Islamabad in which high-level representatives of regional and international organizations from over 30 countries, especially the US, China, India and Afghanistan participated. They pledged to support a stable, peaceful and prosperous Afghanistan which was not only in its own interest, but also vital to peace, stability and prosperity of the ‘Heart of Asia’ region as a whole as well as the West—it was collective responsibility to help Afghanistan in combating the challenges it is facing, as the participants said. In the joint declaration, they reaffirmed the respect for each other’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and reiterated their commitment to refrain from the threat or use of force against one another.

For the purpose, a number of the trilateral meetings were also held among Pakistan, Afghanistan and the America.

On January 13, 2015, at least seven personnel of the Afghan security forces died during the suicide attack which targeted the Pakistani consulate in Jalalabad.

But, Washington is playing double game with Pakistan, because it is the only nuclear country in the Islamic World, which irritates America, India, Israel and some Western partners of the US. In this regard, the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is their special target.

It is of particular attention that Indian role in Pakistan became naked after the arrest of Kulbhushan Yadav on March 24, 2016. Yadav openly admitted that he was the serving agent of Indian RAW in Balochistan province, and during his stay, he contacted various Baloch separatist leaders and insurgents to execute the task to damage the CPEC. Yadav confessed that he spied for India and was “assigned with the task to create unrest in Karachi and Balolchitan…to destabilize Pakistan…he was captured, while heading Iran.”

In the first week of May, credible online sources disclosed that Engineer Mohammad Khan, the 1st Advisor and a close friend of Afghan Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah has been arrested by Afghan forces/agencies for alleged links with the ISIS.

But these anti-Pakistan entities forgot that from 2011 to 2013, some 200 to 400 heavily-armed insurgents from Afghanistan’s side entered Pakistan’s regions from time to time and targetted the security check posts and other infrastructure. In this respect, Pakistan’s civil and military leadership had lodged a strong protest with their counterparts in Afghanistan and NATO, saying that their forces were doing nothing to check the activities of the militants, based in the Afghan provinces of Kunar and Nuristan. Afghan government also refused to hand over Maulvi Fazlullah, leader of the TTP and other militants who had been conducting acts of terrorism in Pakistan.

Taking note of the ground realities, the US and other Western countries have started appreciating the capabilities of Pakistan Army and other security agencies, and are, now, recognizing the sacrifices of the country against terrorism.

By utilizing the vicious circle of terrorism and the dual policy of America, some Western countries, Israel and India, Al-Qaeda, ISIS and TTP also employ double game. Besides working for CIA, Mossad and RAW, these terrorist outfits also motivate the common Muslims for suicide attacks and terror-related activities as part of Jihad. Otherwise, Jihad does not permit suicide assaults. Like other religions, Islam is a religion of peace and prohibits any sort of terrorism.

Nevertheless, still America and some of its NATO allies which prefer India over Pakistan are following conflicting policies. Sometimes, they recognize the fact that there is a co-relationship of stability in Pakistan and Afghanistan and sometimes, they back the propaganda of New Delhi and Kabul against Islamabad in relation to cross-border terrorism in Afghanistan. India which has invested billions of dollars in Afghanistan, signed a wide-ranging strategic agreement with that country on October 5, 2011 also includes to help train Afghan security forces, while assisting Kabul in diversified projects, is manipulating the ambivalent approach of the US-led Western countries so as to further strengthen its grip in Afghanistan.

Regarding Indian activities in Afghanistan the then NATO commander, Gen. McChrystal had pointed out: “Indian political and economic influence is increasing in Afghanistan…is likely to exacerbate regional tensions.” And the US Senator John McCain had reminded the Obama administration that encouraging India to take a more active role in Afghanistan, while simultaneously criticizing Pakistan could be a recipe for disaster.

If NATO withdraws its forces from Afghanistan in future, despite the presence of American or NATO troops on small scale, New Delhi which has been assisting the Northern Alliance (Minority groups) like the America and other Western powers against the Afghan freedom fighters will not be in a position to maintain its network due to successful guerrilla warfare of the Taliban. Afghanistan will be thrown in an era of uncertainty and civil war. In that drastic situation, the US-led foreign donors will not be able to sustain their economic aid in that lawless country.

In this respect, in the recent past, cordial relations were established between Pakistan and Afghanistan when Afghan President Ashraf Ghani had realized that Afghanistan and Pakistan were facing similar challenges of terrorism and would combat this threat collectively.  But, it is misfortune that on direction of New Delhi and like the former regime of Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Afghanistan’s present rulers have also started accusing Pakistan of cross-border terrorism. In this connection, after hours of the Taliban captured Kunduz city, on September 28, 2015, during his address to the UNO General Assembly, Afghanistan’s Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah blamed Islamabad for carrying out cross-border attacks and destabilizing Afghanistan.

Differences exist between Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah and President Ashraf Ghani, as the former wants cordial relations with New Delhi at the cost of Afghanistan and the latter prefers Islamabad.

Notably, the US and Indian trained Afghan troops could no retake Kunduz, and American military recaptured the city. Taking note of the unending resistance of the Taliban, President Barack Obama halted the withdrawal of American military forces from Afghanistan on October 15, 2016 by announcing that “the United States will keep thousands of troops in the country through the end of his term in 2017”, and it means that American and its allied forces will remain there for an indefinite period. Talking about the death of the Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Akhtar Mansour who was killed by the CIA-operated drone attack in Pakistan’s Balochistan, President Obama recognized on May 23, 2016 by saying that the Taliban were “specifically targeting the US personnel and troops inside Afghanistan.” After the incident, Taliban leaders also refused to participate in the US-sponsored talks with the Afghan government. Besides, Pakistan’s civil and military leadership also protested for the violation of international laws and Pakistan’s airspace by the American drone attack.

It is mentionable that on December 10, 2016, President Ghani accepted the resignation of Rahmatullah Nabil as director of the Afghan intelligence agency, National Dirctorrate of Security (NDS), after developing differences of the spymaster with him over Ghani’s move to attend the regional conference (Heart of Asia-Istanbul Process Conference) in Islamabad.

And, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and President Ghani also showed their determination that their countries would cooperate in fighting the threat of ISIS.

In fact, in collusion with Afghanistan’s NDS, Daesh and TTP, RAW still continues cross-border incursions in various regions of Pakistan. Indian nexus with the militant leaders like Hakimullah Masood and Maulvi Fazalullah has been proved by the recent revelation of the TTP militant Latifullah Mahsood who was captured in Pakistan, and he also admitted the role of external secret agencies regarding the incident of Army Public School Peshawar where several innocent children were massacred by the TTP—and exploitation of Baloch sub-nationalists, while, Indian high officials and media have always shifted the blame game of Afghanistan’s unrest towards Pakistan. It is a true reflection of Indian establishment which is intolerant to any improvement in the bilateral relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Nonetheless, the trust between Islamabad and Kubal has remained a sore point in the eyes of foreign enemies, especially India, which have been doing everything possible to create mistrust between the two neighbours. A lot of resources are being pumped in particularly by New Delhi to undermine the relationship between two brotherly countries to fulfill Indian nefarious agenda at the cost of the interests of Afghanistan’s public. For the last fifteen years, foreign-funded NGOs and media have been spearheading the sinister campaign to malign Pakistan for any ill inside Afghanistan, thereby estrange common Afghans against Pakistan.

It is worth-mentioning that Pakistan is the largest Muslim donor country to Afghanistan. Pakistan, itself is suffering from the economic fallout of ongoing war on terror in Afghanistan. Islamabad has, so far, spent over 385 Million $ for the development, education and infrastructure-building in Afghanistan. Pakistan’s present government has added over 500 Million $ more to this list for development in Afghanistan. Pakistan has funded different educational institutions inside Afghanistan such as Allama Iqbal Faculty of Arts-Kabul University, Sir Syed Post Graduate Faculty of Sciences- Nangarhar University, Liaqat Ali Khan Engineering University- Bulkh, Rahman Baba School-Kabul and Rahman Baba Hostel-Kabul. Afghan citizens are allowed to avail medical and education facilities in Pakistan at par with the Pakistani Citizens. Islamabad has helped Afghan government in developmental projects and roads infrastructure, including building of 75 kilometers Torkham-Jalalabad Road, additional carriage way on Torkham-Jalalabad Road, three internal roads in Jalalabad, digital radio link between Kabul and Peshawar. In addition, Pakistan has also given around 100 public transport buses and 200 trucks to the government of Afghanistan for the welfare of Afghan public.

Undoubtedly, Pakistan has rendered huge sacrifices for the people of Afghanistan, and had stood with the Afghans in Afghan Jihad against the former USSR and hosted record number of over 3 Million refugees for longest duration, despite its own weak economic condition.

However, Pakistan shares common geographical, historical, religious and cultural bonds with Afghanistan. America and its Western partners have repeatedly recognized that Pak-Afghan stability is inter-related, which is essential for their global and regional interests. Therefore, US-led developed nations which also spent billions of dollars for the development of Afghanistan have repeatedly agreed that without Islamabad’s help, stability cannot be achieved there. But, by following the conflicting interests, the US-led countries are deteriorating Pakistan-Afghanistan relations to obtain their covert aims, and are, thus, destabilizing South Asian security which is equally essential for them.

Unimaginable Progress of the Operation Zarb-e-Azb

 By Sajjad Shaukat

Before the start of the military operation Zarb-e-Azb, terrorists had been, primarily, waged a war against the citizens of Pakistan, their values, beliefs and assets. 200 million people of Pakistan had, bravely, been facing various kinds of terrorist acts for the last 14 years. Currently, Iraq, Egypt, Libya, Syria and other Muslim countries are in shambles due to the terrorism, being conducted by the AI-Qaeda, the ISIS and other militant outfits. But, unlike other countries war against terrorism, including the US-led Western countries’ war against these non-state actors, Pakistan’s Armed Forces displayed unimaginable progress through the ongoing military operation Zarb-e-Azb which started on Jun 15, 2014 against the militants in North Waziristan Agency (NWA) and afterwards extended to other tribal areas, has almost successfully achieved its objectives.

In the recent past, while showing the progress of the Zarb-e-Azb, Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Raheel Sharif said, “Terrorists have been cleared from their strongholds in North Waziristan and Khyber Agency and fight now is moving into last few pockets close to Afghan border.” He laid emphasis on “continuation of the operations till elimination of the last expected and probable terrorists groups and sanctuaries.”

When the Pakistan Government decided to launch this operation, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif took the nation into confidence through parliament, asserting that Pakistan would not be allowed to become safe havens of terrorists. Earlier, DG, ISPR Directorate, Major-Gen. Asim Saleem Bajwa had stated, “Armed forces of Pakistan have launched the operation against foreign and local terrorists…who had been waging a war against the state of Pakistan by disrupting our national life in all its dimensions, stunting our economic growth and causing enormous loss of life and property…with the support of the entire nation, these enemies will be denied space across the country.” He further stated that military operation would continue till achievement of ultimate objectives.

On June 16, 2014, Gen. Raheel Sharif also pointed out, “Operation Zarb-e-Azb has been launched with the objectives of rooting out terrorists, eliminate their sanctuaries in NWA and rid the country of terrorism.”

After the militants of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) massacred 132 school children at Army school in Peshawar on December 16, 2014, while emphasizing national unity against terrorists, Gen. Raheel had repeatedly stated, “Our resolve has taken new height”, and added “We will continue to go after the inhuman beasts, their facilitators till their final elimination.”

However, since June 15, 2014, the jets of Pakistan Air Force have bombed militants’ hideouts in North Waziristan Agency and Khyber Agency and killed thousands of insurgents including foreign militants, while Pak Army has also killed several terrorists through ground offensive and many of them surrendered before the Army. Thus, these forces destroyed their strongholds, demolishing tunnels and factories producing IED (Explosives), while drying the sources of their funds and sinking their public support.
In fact, the different war between Pakistan’s Armed Forces and the TTP insurgents (And their affiliated groups) is simply a ‘clash of wills’ between two entities. Military thinkers agree that although the physical force will determine the type and scale of war, yet it is the ‘will to fight’ or ‘moral force’ that determines the outcome of war. Clausewitz puts it this way, “One might say that the physical force seems little more than the wooden hilt, while moral factors are the precious metal, the real weapon.”

In his book, “Fighting Power: German and U.S. Army Performance, 1939-1945”, Creveld identifies the elements of ‘moral force’, whom he calls “fighting power, the willingness to fight and the readiness, if necessary, to die.” The greater these elements, the less vulnerable an armed force will be to demoralization. ‘Moral force’, then, is the crucial factor in determining the combat power of any belligerent.

During the successful military operation, Zarb-e-Azb” retreat of the Taliban from North Waziristan has proved that such elements like ‘will to fight’ and ‘moral force’ have been more found in Pakistan’s Armed Forces then the Taliban militants.

Nevertheless, there are other causes which also demoralized the insurgents of the TTP and their affiliated militant outfits. Firstly, strong determination and cohesiveness as noted in Pakistan’s Armed Forces played a key role in expelling terrorists from North Waziristan Agency and other tribal regions. And during street to street fighting, without bothering for their lives, and by air-dropping commandos at the risky places, our forces made a great headway in disrupting the Taliban supply routes, and links. Secondly, general masses of the area opposed the brutal acts of these terrorists which compelled them to leave their houses. They came to know that under the cover of Islamic laws—terror, not Sharia was these militants’ real agenda. Hence, they were misusing Jihad which does not allow suicide attacks in killing their own Muslim brethren.

Undoubtedly, Pakistan’s Armed Forces have successfully broken the backbone and organized capability of terrorists to launch well thought-out attacks against the government assets and on innocent people. They have met serious setbacks during the operation Zarb-e-Azb, and shall, finally, be totally eliminated from Pakistan. It appears, as if the militants of TTP have lost major grounds, and in severe frustration, they are trying to create some kind of so-called pressure on the government and the Armed Forces through some terror-activities which are due to external support of Indian RAW and some foreign secret agencies to these terrorists, as they want to destabilize Pakistan which is the lonely nuclear country in the Islamic World. However, Armed Forces have castigated these terrorist’s outfits to put up strong resistance.

It is notable that the North Waziristan Agency is the largest tribal agency with difficult and complicated topography. But, by sacrificing their own lives, the North Waziristan Agency and some other tribal areas have been cleared by the Pak Army. Therefore, the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) have returned to North Waziristan and some other tribal areas and Pak Army helped them in their resettlement.

As terrorists had accelerated un-Islamic practices, while challenging the writ of the state, and had frightened the entire nation by their terror-acts. Therefore, leaders of various political and religious parties including all segments of society and media anchors—particularly commentators of TV channels, who wanted that a handful of terrorist elements must not be allowed to dictate their agenda and to impose their self-perceived ideology on the majority of Pakistanis are admiring the successes, achieved during the operation Zarb-e-Azb. Now, the whole nation is united against terrorism and is backing the military operation against these brutal militants in other regions of the country.

No doubt, the progress of the Zarb-e-Azb is very encouraging, as it is fruitfully advancing towards its logical end.

The unimaginable Progress of the Operation Zarb-e-Azb can be judged from the fact that what the well-equipped and well-modernized the  US-led NATO countries could not do in Afghanistan in more than 14 years, Pakistan’s Armed Forces had done in one year. Taking note of the ground realities, the US and other Western countries have started appreciating the capabilities of Pakistan Army and other security agencies like ISI.

Operation Zarb - e - Azb, the All Time Success

Tariq Rizwan
The recent announcement from DG ISPR on 20 May 2016 that our brave Army soldiers have cleared the last militant stronghold “Shawal Valley” in North Waziristan tribal region has provided a sigh of relief. It took three-months to clear the valley.  In February troops began the final phase of the Zarb – e - Arb mission in North Waziristan, bordering Afghanistan Birmal District, where militants had previously operated with impunity. The incharge of the operation, Brigadier Shabbir Narejo told reporters at a briefing, “We have cleared the Shawal valley, where militants put up stiff resistance. Troops, gunship helicopters, tanks and jets were used in the operation. There were up to 2,000 trained militants in the valley, but we surprised them by launching the operation in the peak of winter in minus 12 degrees Celsius (10.4 Fahrenheit). Six Army soldiers lost lives in the fighting whereas up to 120 militants were killed. Some militants had fled to Afghanistan, but that troops had set up around 15 posts on the border to intercept any movement in future”.
Operation Zarb - e - Azb was launched on 15 June 2014 in a bid to flush out nurseries and militant bases in Miranshah, Agency Head Quarter of North Waziristan and its suburbs. It began one week after the terrorist attack on Pakistan’s busiest airport. On 8 June 2014, 10 militants from the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan and TTP attacked Jinnah International Airport, Karachi, killing 28 people including security personnel and wounding at least 18.
The crackdown was intensified after the APS massacre in Peshawar, in which more than 150 people mostly children were murdered cold bloodedly in December 2014. It has been a very successful operation as the graph of terrorist activities in the country dropped to the lowest during last 6/7 years and militant network in the area has been destroyed.
Pakistan has been a victim of worst kind of terrorism after 9/11. The militants fled from US/ISAF bombing in Afghanistan crossed over to Pakistan Tribal Belt where they established their hideouts.  Pakistan suffered a lot being ally of America in the war and faced internal and external challenges. Prominent militant groups that emerged and fought Pakistan LEAs are Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU), Jundallah, Al-Qaeda, Haqqani Network , East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM), and sectarian outfit Lashkar-e-Jhangvi.
Earlier, the sitting regime announced peace negotiations with the Taliban groups operating in Pakistan. The negotiations were held through some religious scholars. The first session of talks between committees appointed by the Pakistani Government and the Taliban was held on 26 March 2014 at Khyber Pakhtunkhwa House in Islamabad. The Taliban did not name representatives from their ranks, instead nominated pro-Taliban religious figures to present their views. The terrorists called for the implementation of Islamic Sharia in Pakistan; the Government of Pakistan demanded the cessation of hostilities, insisting that talks be held within the framework of the Pakistani constitution. A month-long ceasefire was reached on 1 March 2014. Anyhow, negotiations collapsed after the execution of 23 Pakistani Frontier Corps soldiers by the Taliban on 17 February 2014. The soldiers had been held by the insurgents since 2010, and on 17 April 2014 the TTP formally ended the ceasefire.
Army was in full preparation and launched a three pronged strategy, isolating targeted militant groups, obtaining support from the political parties and saving civilians from the backlash of the operation. Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said that the nation stood by its military.
The combat troops encircled militant bases in the towns of Mirali and Miranshah. Pakistani officials said that the Afghan's National Security Forces (ANSF) was requested to seal the border on their side so that militants do not escape. Air Force, Navy artillery, tanks and ground troops remained engaged.
Zarb e Azb; being the largest military operation in the Waziristan area has found support from different entities from inside and outside of the country. The main purpose of this operation was to bring peace to the northern areas of the country. Zarb e Azb has got appreciation form leading journalists and analysts from Pakistan and it has also been supported by all the major political parties of the country. Only Jammat-e-Islami publically criticized the operation saying that there should be no operation in North Waziristan and all the matters should be resolved via peace talks with Taliban. Pakistan has also got international support from many different countries such as America and China.
The recent announcement of ISPR shows that after one and half year phenomenal successes have been achieved in the operation. Last pockets close to Pak - Afghan Border has been cleared. Eighteen months into Operation Zarb-e-Azb launched against militants, ISPR claimed 3,400 militants have been killed so far. “3,400 terrorists killed while 837 hideouts from where they were carrying out their terrorist acts, destroyed. About 837 hideouts from where they were carrying out their terrorists activities have been destroyed.
Apart, South Waziristan, once a stronghold of the TTP where the extremists operated with impunity has also been cleared in operation Rah-e-Nijat against Baitullah Mehsud group, launched in 2009. The towns are now welcoming thousands of displaced families back to their homes. From the helicopter, journalists could see scores of homes with no roofs but appearing otherwise intact, their interiors exposed to the elements, though it was unclear how many had been removed by the military and how many had been damaged by the weather and fighting. Traditionally roofs in South Waziristan are built of wood and iron sheets to hold off heavy winter snows, but from the helicopter hundreds could be seen with their wooden skeletons bared and interiors exposed.
Authorities have rebuilt roads, constructed health facilities, schools and restored the village water supply network system in the area. But the lack of shelter is still a serious issue. The Mehsud inhibited north of South Waziristan is mostly mountainous and building house is not an easy task. Government is providing up to 400,000 rupees ($4,000) to families for the rebuilding of their homes.

Indo-Iran Chahbahar Port: Why India is bound to be disappointed

By: News Desk
BEIJING:  The recent Indo-Iran deal to develop the strategic Chabahar Port is part of India’s “larger geo-strategic calculations” to gain access to the Middle East and Central Asia and to counter Pakistan-China’s plan to develop Gwadar port, a media report said in Beijing today.
“Actually, Chabahar is just the tip of the iceberg of India’s geostrategic ambitions. Besides building new berths and upgrades to Chabahar, what interests New Delhi more is a comprehensive scheme that can reshape India’s geopolitics to the northwest and extend its influence further into the Middle East, Central Asia and the Trans-Caucasus,” an article in the state-run Global Times said today.
To this end, India has recently committed USD 400 million in steel to construction of the railway connecting Chabahar and Zahedan, near Afghan border, the report said.
“Although New Delhi ostensibly highlights economic considerations, such as facilitating trade along the International North-South Transport Corridor and extracting minerals, natural gas and oil from the region, its larger geo-strategic calculations and ambitions are obvious,” it said.
“A direct gateway through Pakistan provides the shortest and the most economical access for India to enter Afghanistan and Central Asia,” it said.
However, due to long-standing mistrust, Islamabad is reluctant to grant India access.
“The sea-land route of Chabahar Port is designed to bypass Pakistan. With the new route, some Indian strategists suggest that India can take further advantage of its ties with Iran and Afghanistan and gain new leverage and positioning while reducing Pakistan’s political and economic influence in the region,” the report said.
“Besides bypassing the overland blockage, India also views its investment in Chabahar as a counterweight against Pakistan’s Gwadar Port, a Chinese-funded deep sea port 72 km east of Chabahar,” it said.
China and Pakistan are currently building a USD 46 billion economic corridor linking Pakistan’s Gwadar port with Xinjiang to improve connectivity between the two countries.
“Although India’s expectations of Chabahar and the sea-land route are running high, especially following the lifting of international financial sanctions against Iran, major challenges remain.
India may not be able to meet its generous offers and high-sounding rhetoric due to the following reasons,” it said.
1.Iran may not always align itself with India’s geostrategic goals.
2.China is also crucial to Tehran’s core interests.
3. Iran never publicly articulated its opposition to the Sino-Pakistani project in Gwadar. Instead, it had aided the project by providing fresh water and fuel,” it said.
4. China is Iran’s biggest importer of the Oil and Iran will never want to annoy China against India.
5. Iran may again face US sanctions over its missile programme and the trade with Iran and through Iran may again go into doldrums.
6. Chahbahar is not as a deep sea port as Gwadar port of Pakistan is and the heavily loaded ships may not anchor at Chahbahar unlike Gwadar.
7. India may not invest as much in cash starved  Chahbahar as China is investing in Gwadar.
8. Afghanistan and Central Asian Republics may not support India as much as they may China in their economic goals.
9. India’s route to CAR states and Afghanistan through Chahbahar is much longer than the both Gwadar Port and the China itself hence reducing the time and money both for Pakistani and Chinese products.
10. The developing geo strategic situation vis a vis India heavily aligning with US and US going against Iran may trouble the Indo-Iran equation in future.
11. Relations between Pakistan and Iran may develop in future after removal of the bilateral misunderstandings and economic connectivity may flourish after Pak-Iran Gas Pipeline and Iranian oil flowing through CPEC projects to China may force Iran to reconsider it’s strategic alignment with India.
The report said that if India expected too much from Iran, it is “bound for disappointment”.
